Roofing Contractor in Amherst, OH
Amherst built its name on sandstone, and a lot of the homes here have been around long enough to show their age. The typical house in town dates to about 1971, and more than one in ten were built before 1940. We have been busy in Amherst lately, on everything from full roof replacements to new gutters and siding.
ARC Roofing & Home Improvements is family-owned and has served Northeast Ohio since 1985. Our own crews do the work, and most roofs are replaced in a single day.

Current Offer
Free gutter guards with any full roof replacement signed by November 30, 2026.

Old Downtown Homes and Newer Neighborhoods
Amherst housing comes in layers. There are older homes near the five-point intersection downtown, where Main Street meets Cleveland, Milan and Park Avenues. There is a big wave of 1950s and 1960s houses, and newer streets built in the 1990s and 2000s. Each group needs something different from a roofer, so every estimate starts with the deck, the attic and the drainage, not just the shingles.
Older homes near downtown – These houses often hide two or three layers of shingles and soft spots in the decking. We tear off to the boards and fix what we find before the new roof goes on.
1950s and 1960s ranches – Low-slope roofs over porches and additions are a common source of leaks. We use materials made for low slopes there instead of stretching shingles where they do not belong.
1990s and 2000s subdivisions – Original roofs from this era are wearing out now. We replace them with complete Owens Corning systems.

Big Trees, Big Storms
Mature trees are part of what makes Amherst feel like home, right up until a storm brings them down. In August 2023 the National Weather Service reported about 20 large trees down in Amherst and three homes damaged by them. On March 31, 2026, a large tree fell onto a house on North Main Street, and in June 2026 Amherst was again among the hardest-hit parts of Lorain County, with trees down on Jackson Street and Cleveland Avenue.

Questions We Hear in Amherst
Should I worry about the trees hanging over my roof?
Big limbs over a roof cause two problems: impact damage in storms, and constant debris that clogs gutters and holds moisture on the shingles. We point out problem limbs during the inspection and recommend gutter guards where they make sense.
My house is near the downtown historic district. Do I need design approval?
Amherst’s Design Review Board reviews commercial buildings in the Downtown Historical District. For a house, call the Building Department to confirm, and we can help with any paperwork the city needs.
