Here’s a room-by-room (well, exterior-by-exterior) checklist to work through while the weather still cooperates.
Roof
- Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles from the ground with binoculars, or have a professional check from the roof itself.
- Check flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights — this is the most common source of winter leaks.
- Check your gutters for granule buildup, which can be a sign your shingles are wearing down.
- Trim back any tree branches hanging over the roof to reduce debris buildup and storm damage risk.
- Schedule a professional inspection before the first hard freeze, especially if your roof is more than 10-15 years old.
Gutters
- Clear out leaves and debris — ideally after most of the leaves have fallen, since clogged gutters are a leading cause of ice dams.
- Check for sagging sections or gutters pulling away from the fascia board.
- Confirm downspouts direct water at least a few feet away from your foundation.
- Consider gutter guards if you’re tired of climbing a ladder every fall — installing them before peak leaf season saves you a cleaning or two.
- Check that gutters are still properly pitched so water doesn’t pool and freeze.
Siding
- Inspect for cracks, warping, or loose panels that could let moisture behind the siding over winter.
- Check caulking around windows, doors, and trim and re-caulk anywhere it’s cracked or missing.
- Look for soft spots or discoloration, which can indicate moisture damage underneath.
- Power wash if it’s looking dingy — it’s easier to spot problem areas on a clean surface, and it’s one less job in spring.
